Cancer Research UK
Pioneer of the Year
Awarded to Relay for Life Liskeard Committee

Flame of Hope Badge
Your Liskeard Relay Committee were thrilled to be presented with a Special Commendation in the Cancer Research UK Flame of Hope Awards by Sophie Barber,
Relationship Manager, Cornwall & Plymouth.
Sophie said “When the whole world stopped last March, the Relay for Life committee in Liskeard got their thinking caps on. Their Relay event is the first of the season in the UK and so they didn’t have much time, a lot of committees would have decided to cancel for 2020 but not Liskeard – they decided to go virtual. Their virtual event was the first virtual Relay event in the country and this was their idea even before staff at Cancer Research UK had thought about it. Their event set a very high standard, inspiring Cancer Research UK to encourage others all over the country to go virtual too and not to give up on raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK because of the pandemic.
The innovation didn’t stop there, last year the Relay also encouraged one of their talented team members to write a ‘Relay song’, the song was picked up by Cancer Research UK because it absolutely captured the essence of Relay for Life. The song was professionally recorded and released on all major download and streaming sites. With 5,501 streams to date, the Relay song really has become the Relay anthem across the UK relaying population. Luke, who wrote the song is now booked up for virtual and in person performances at Relays across the country this year.
The committee have kept going throughout the whole pandemic, organising virtual event after virtual event from quizzes to craft competitions for everyone to get involved with from home. They also held virtual catch ups with their teams and were so innovative with the ideas for these to make them fun and interactive. They held virtual pancake flipping, coffee mornings & even a cheese board evening.
All of this activity has meant that the Relay have still managed to raise £21,000 in 2020, which is incredible. Not only that but they have kept their whole community engaged and have managed to keep Cancer Research UK at the top of people’s agendas which at a time like this is very difficult but so important.
Liskeard Relay continue to amaze us, running with new ideas and achieving incredible fundraising totals. They are a joy to work with, a very inspiring, motivated group of people. “

Relay For Life

Relay For Life is a family festival celebrating the power of community fundraising in the fight to beat cancer.

Teams fundraise for life-saving cancer research then unite at a weekend-long festival to celebrate and remember everyone who has been affected by cancer. The festival is focused around a 24-hour relay where team members take it in turns to walk around a track to show that together we will beat cancer.

Relayers keep walking all through the night because Cancer never sleeps so neither will we.
