What is Relay

What Makes a Relay

A Relay is a year round fund raising event for Cancer Research.  It started in America but has now spread around the world.

Elements of a relay

Relay Walkers

Teams

Teams are at the heart of Relay for Life. During the year leading up to Relay day they run a range of fundraising events and collections.

On the day itself they man the teams stalls, help with the running of Relay and take turns to walk round the track.

Survivors raise a glass

Survivors

Survivors are our Guests of Honour at the Relay event.  Anyone who has recently been given a Cancer Diagnosis or who has been surviving Cancer for any number of years is welcome to join as a survivor.

Our survivors walk the first lap while the rest of the people watch and they are then given a Survivors’ tea with their family and friends.  They often stay on the site for a good deal of the day, some staying and walking throughout the day.  They are very special people.

Candle of Hope

As dusk falls at about 10pm on Saturday evening walkers, and other people who wish to join us, assemble at the stage to listen to some specially chosen words and music.

Quilt of Hope

The Quilt of Hope is an opportunity to be a part of a permanent project dedicated to and fundraising for Cancer Research UK Relay for Life.

By purchasing a patch, you can add any name, sentiment, or message which will be hand embroidered and then added to a large patchwork quilt to be displayed at many events.

Fundraising

At Liskeard we fundraise throughout the year doing a range of various activities over the year.  We collect in many different locations – local supermarkets, street collections and twice a year on the Torpoint Ferry.

Other fundraising activities that our teams and committee organise are:-

Horse-race evenings, curry nights, quizzes, tombolas, fashion shows, bingo nights and, of course, every one of the events involves a raffle.

Last year we held a very successful Dog Show and for the past few years we have also organised our 10Km Stride event at Lanhydrock a local National Trust estate.

We also have had several members and friends who have celebrated special occasions and chosen to ask for donations in lieu of presents to be donated to their team total.
